For those of you who don't think the NWTF is really doing anything in our state I show you this!
Florida NWTF State Super Fund Projects
The Wild Turkey Super Fund allows the NWTF to concentrate its spending on projects that directly benefit wild turkey conservation, management and education. The Wild Turkey Super Fund is a pool of funds raised by NWTF volunteers at membership banquets and donated by corporate sponsors and individuals. Each states’ Super Fund money is used on conservation and education projects within that state. Nationally, NWTF chapters and cooperating partners have raised more than $100 million in respective states for the wild turkey resource. Since 1985 more than $405,461 have been raised by Florida chapters and spent on projects within the state. A sampling of these projects is provided below.
Habitat Enhancement
Provided seed, fertilizer and other materials for establishment and maintenance of 8,638 acres of wildlife openings and habitat, and burning of 92,164 acres on: Apalachicola National Forest, Bull Creek WMA, Camp Blanding WMA, Caravelle Ranch WMA, Champion International WMA, Chassahowitzka WMA, Corbett WMA, Croom WMA, Fort Drum WMA, Green Swamp WMA, Hilochee WMA, Lake George WMA, Moores Pasture WMA, Osceola National Forest, Point Washington WMA, Three Lakes WMA, Triple N Ranch WMA, Twin Rivers WMA, Upper Hillsborough WMA and Webb WMA.
Equipment
Purchased and donated equipment to the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission: one aerial ignition device for prescribed aerial burning, three telemetry receivers for wild turkey research, one rotary mower and offset disk for maintenance of brood habitat, one camera for turkey surveys, one ATV, one fire torch for prescribed burns, one bull shed and one spreader.
Research
Spent $31,883 on wild turkey research.
Funded research investigating brood habitat, poult mortality, population estimation techniques, seasonality of gobbling, and genetic marking.
Rewards
Paid out $4,000 in rewards for tips that led to arrests of turkey poachers.
Purchased and distributed 11,000 reward signs and bumper stickers.
Education and JAKES
Funded 83 JAKES events and educational activities.
Purchased 1,225 JAKES activity books and 1,000 JAKES coloring books for distribution to kids.
Purchased 1,900 copies of hunting education video.
Purchased 3,000 copies of "Managing the Wild Turkey in Florida" for distribution.
Purchased 200 Wildlife Forever CD ROMs for distribution to schools.
Supported FFA academic scholarship. · Purchased 40 educational boxes.
Helped to develop shotgun range at Flaming Arrow Scout Reservation
