Glen,

If you missed one last year at 30yrds I don't think a 3.5" is going to help. AT that range you would be better off with the old 2 and 3/4". I think some of these new turkey guns hold to tight of a pattern, which will cause you to miss close shots if your not real carefull. Thats what I use but, I don't take shots over 40yrds. I feel if I can't get the turkey within 40yrds than I haven't done my job. I also use #6 shot. As far a the second bird I think I would wait and see if you get the first! Ha Ha.
