Brad Pitt vs. Sean Penn: Did Small Release Help Box Office Poison Tag?

By Jennifer Cox
Sep 23, 2007

It can't be comforting for Brad Pitt that a pretty good western "3:10 To Yuma," starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, still pulled in $6.1 mil in 2,902 theaters this weekend after winning the box office on its first week out. Pitt was so worried about another box office bomb that he decided not to go wide with his highly touted "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" instead electing a "micro release" for the film.

Another failure would get the tag "box office poison" placed on Pitt. That is already one of Sean Penn's many tags. Both former Hollywood heavyweights had little choice but to think small this weekend and it worked out pretty good for both. Of course they will likely never have broad appeal again without help (where's George Clooney when Pitt needs him) but their films did okay in the few theaters where they were released.

Deadline Hollywood Daily's Nikki Finke has the details: "Warner Bros platformed Brad Pitt's Oscar-touted The Assassination of Jesse James in five theaters; with an excellent per screen average of as much as $11,844 on Saturday, it debuted to $142K."

"But Sean Penn's writing and directorial effort Into The Wild based on a true story and book played in only 4 theaters (NY and LA) and outgrossed Brad’s pic 2-to-1 with $206K and enjoyed a tremendous per screen average, the highest ever for Sean. This, and the R rated Paramount Vantage pic's positive reviews, should increase its Oscar chatter."
