Yep, Terry, Brad Renfro was in Sleepers with Brad, playing the young Michael Sullivan (Brad's character) It is now coming to light that he apparently had a secret baby son, who lives in Japan (they're not revealing his name to protect his privacy). At least he had a chance to experience fatherhood also before his life was snuffed out so prematurely. And he really was a fine actor too but he spun out of control, i wish i could say i was surprised by the news of his death. I was much more shocked by Heath Ledger though, simply because he led a very quiet life, free of controversy and scandal. Which is not to say he didnt dabble in things, i am sure he did, he just managed to stay on the right side of the law...
Somebody else mentioned that these things come in 3 and get this, they both died on a Tues, Renfro on Jan 15, Ledger exactly a week later. Kinda gives me the creeps...let's hope nothing else happpens.
It really is a sad trend, and not just with actors in their 20s. Amazing how they managed to pull Owen Wilson from the brink back in August, isn't it?
I think what it is, is that the stakes are much higher when it comes to temptation. When Brad was just starting out, obviously drugs were out there but there wasn't this notion of excess, there wasn't even as much papparazzi scrutiny. Cases like River Phoenix were beyond rare (he died from heroin overdose) In the last 15 years, all this crap just took off, the media circus, etc. and it really hit the young celebrities the hardest. When you get so used to always getting anything you want, what's stopping you from going over the edge?
I'd really like to believe Heath Ledger's death had nothing to do with a drug habit but unfortunately, the realist in me knows that it probably isn't the case. I guess we'll have to wait and see....
