I got this article in a newsletter from the US Sombo Association. This stuff ain't no joke. Remember to clean your mats every day and always wash your body and your training uniforms after each practice. Read on........

MSRA (The New Strain of Staph)
by Lance Campbell

MSRA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus)

Recently, one of my training partners had what appeared to be an
ingrown hair on his leg. A couple of days later it turned into a large boil.
At this point, he decided to go to Urgent Care. They informed him that
it was a new type of staph infection called MSRA, and placed him on
oral antibiotics. They told him to come back if it did not improve in a
day or two. It kept getting worse, so he had to go in for antibiotics
through an I.V.

A few weeks later, I caught a special report on FOX News about MSRA.
Originally, MSRA was most common in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
Recently, the problem has spread to other locations such as health
clubs, football teams, and other places in the general community.
Obviously, the report caught my attention, as I realized that MSRA is a
potential problem for all grapplers. MSRA is resistant to certain
antibiotics including methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as
oxacillin, penicillin and amoxicillin.

MSRA frequently appears as a tiny red spot, or an infected hair
follicle. Then it usually turns into a boil. If you think you may have an
MSRA infection, you should see your healthcare provider immediately. To
prevent MSRA infections you should follow the the same precautions I
mentioned in a previous issue for preventing other infectious skin
conditions. These precautions include maintaining proper hygiene. Shower
immediately after practice. Pay extra attention to keeping cuts and
abrasions clean. Keep your gear clean, and try to avoid sharing gear with
other people. For more information on MSRA, go to
