Do yourself a favor and visit Charles June Karate Institute. It is prabably not the MMA your looking for, but it is also probably unlike any karate you've seen before. There are people there who are very serious about their training. http://www.charlesjunekarate.com/
(website not updated much at all.)

The school has very close ties with a jujitsu school about 20-25 miles dound the road. http://www.stroudschool.com/black_belt_gallery.htm

Regarding MMA...There are 3 gyms. None is far from ECU campus (nore is Charles June), though they are not really in easy walking distance or on a bus route.

The newest and least known to me: http://www.shikatamma.com/index.html

Distastefully flashy (to me): http://www.groundgrappling.com/all-american.htm

Another one:
http://www.bjjnc.com/default.html

Congratulations on your ECU plans. Go Pirates!!!

I have been training for the past year at the All American Martial Arts Academy (AAMAA). We're small in numbers, but we've got some great guys to roll with. I won my first MMA fight, and these guys trained me well. I couldn't have done it without them. (I was the first fighter to come out of their gym, and now, we've got three other guys set to compete before the year's end.) We have a great Muay-Thai coach as well, along with Yoga on Saturdays. Again, we're not gonna impress you with hundreds of members, but the guys we have are serious about their BJJ and about competing in MMA/grappling tournaments. Just last week, one teammate won both his no-gi and gi division in a grappling tournament.

You should try us out. There is someone there to roll with seven days a week, and everybody there is always willing to help you out.

Good luck with your search...

Yes. My brother gave me that nickname, and it stuck. Are you an MMA fighter as well?

Not anymore (unless I do something silly in the next year) but my guys shared a locker room with you at the CFP event in Dorton Arena. I run the Team Roc in angier, NC. I had two guys fight in that show.

Okay, I remember the room being full of Team ROC guys that night. They were really cool. I talked with Pete Martin that night (super cool dude) and David Nesbit (sp?), both from Team ROC in Raleigh. That night was a good experience for me. Team ROC mopped up that night, too.

I've heard of Angier, but I'm not sure where it is. I'm sure you house some terrific fighters as well. I wish I had the time to train with you Team ROC guys, but I teach school, so summer's about the only time when my schedule's not free. (I'm probably only gonna fight about three more times anyway, and then concentrate on my Gracie belts.)

Cool talking to you, bro, and good luck in your endeavors. If I'm ever in your gym's area, it would be an honor for me to train with your men. I'm sure they could teach me a lot.

I meant to say when my schedule's not "busy," instead of free...

If MMA is what you are looking to train I believe AAMAA is about the best school within 90 mins of Greenville. I have trained at a couple of other martial arts gyms in the area and have not found any that can match the well rounded techniques it takes to be a fighter. We have a small team, but each member brings experience from other backgrounds and push eachother hard. Our instructors are well established in their respective martial arts areas and truly strive to make their students complete fighters. I'd say come by, give us a try. We do allow trial classes so you can get a feel for things.
