Why is the game of weight classes so complicated, everybody is scared of their own weight class so they drop down, weigh in swell up and beat up on the "little guy". Imagine the flyweights have no where to go. Lets have weigh ins only the day of from 8-9:30 am with gi on if thats the tourn, then if you place you must weigh-in still within your weight class or be disqualified. This will keep competion even. If not remove the weight classes and just have absolute tournaments. Why not have the rules meeting during weigh-ins, have videos of what not to do and what points are awarded, have a ref. there to answer questions. Then from 9:30 to 10:30 make up brackets at 10:30 sharp tourney starts, whats so hard with that.

All same day weigh ins will do is result in some guys getting some dehydration. Guys who are used to weight cutting (wrestlers) are not really going to be affected. So all same day weigh ins do is hurt the guys who are new to cutting weight.

You can always lift, get stronger and be in the absolute best shape you can too. Because if you dont want to cut weight you are going to have to have more gas and be as strong as possible to press the guys who are cutting weight. But at a certain level of training/experience everyone is in good shape and everyone is strong so it comes back to weight cutting in the end.

I agree fully with the step on the scales before your first match and weigh in with your gi on. It will speed up the registration process. Cut all the weight you like, if it affects you in your first match oh well. After that eat and balloon up all you like. They do this now in the pan-ams and the worlds.

I think weight cutting is part of any sport with weight classes, MMA, wrestling, Judo and BJJ. Oh well. I think the weigh in before you fight just ads an interesting twist.

My bringing this up is only wanting an equalization. Lets take the Charlotte tournament, A guy weighs in on friday night 155 but by sun afternoon has ballooned up to his normal weight of 168, he fights a guy who always walks around at 153. Is this equal? Sure the 155 can drop into the 145, but then where does the 145 guy drop to. Here again I think a standard needs to be in place, example like in Nascar. Try to let the art of BJJ shine through rather then just about strength and weight or get rid of weight classes all together.

I was not saying I dont agree with the spirit of your post. Reality unfortunately does not agree with either of us. Jason's answer is the best solution, but like he said, guys are still going to cut weight and some guys are good enough/experienced enough at it they wont perform too much differently with same day weigh ins.

I think its fine if guys cut weight, but during the competition, the weights should be equal to be fair. Everyone of us have said if techniques are equal, if you give a guy 15 lbs he is going to be tough to handle. Here again everyone is on the same page, I just think the process should be tweaked a little and i think we would see better competition.
