Thanks. The post was more a result of having limited computer access for the last few weeks, and trying to remember all the things I wanted to talk about, and probably forgetting half of them....

- I've been thinking more and more about Thome, and have lightened my stance. While the money difference was pretty substantial, I think the driving factor in his decision was the chance to win. Shapiro has made his intentions clear about the team's direction, and at 32 years old, Thome probably wasn't going to be on a contender anytime real soon with the Indians. For some reason, I get the feeling that behind closed doors Shapiro isn't shedding any tears over the outcome. The Phillies overpaid for David Bell, Thome and Remlinger, and will overpay if they get Glavine.
1. Rollins - SS
2. Polanco - 2B
3. Abreu - RF
4. Thome - 1B
5. Burrell - LF
6. Lieberthal - C
7. Bell - 3B
8. Byrd/Glanville - CF

Not bad, but they have some question marks on the staff.

- Someone please explain to me the Ken Griffey Jr. for Phil Nevin trade rumors. Apparently Phil invoked his no-trade clause tonight to deny the trade. Whew. I like Griff, but if you're trying to cut back payroll, it doesn't make much sense to take on a player getting over $12 million a year, and hobbling around on two bad sticks. Must there be a close-call with Nevin every year? He almost went to the Brewers last year for Jeromy Burnitz. :( I wouldn't mind seeing Phil go, but I want to get something nice in return. Speaking of which....

- how about the Cubs? Over the last 3 years, Nevin has a .372 average, .440 OBP, and .767 SLG% at Wrigley Field. Also over the last 3 years, his OPS at night is .827 and his OPS during the day is 1.043. He's said that he sees the ball much better during the day, and that he loves to hit at Wrigley.

- if Royce Clayton gets a job with the Padres, while Chris Stynes is unemployed, I'll be sad.

- in NCAA hoops, Texas still has to play in a tournament where they play George Washington (in D.C.) and then Maryland or Notre Dame. Let me just say it again while I can, Texas is #2 in NCAA hoops! They probably won't be there next week when they get around to #1 Arizona. The whole Big XII looks a little overrated this year.

- in college football, if Wash. St. loses to UCLA this weekend, then the last at-large bid in the BCS will go to either Notre Dame, Texas or Kansas St. I kinda hope Washington State wins, just so I don't have to deal with the frustration of Notre Dame being taken over the other two, for no reason other than $$$. Nor do I want Texas to play Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl. That's a no-win situation. "So what" if you win, black eye if you lose.

- Gina, if you're reading, please do what you can to keep Coach Fran at Alabama. As a Longhorn fan, the idea of having him at Texas A&M is scary.

- with very little fanfare, one of the greatest receivers in NFL history retired today. Herman Moore still holds the record with 123 catches in a season. His comments suggest he may play some more down the road, but I think he's a Hall of Famer even if he doesn't catch another ball.

- Rich Gannon is averaging 323 yards passing a game. If he averages 302 yards a game over his last 4 games, he'll break Dan Marino's record of 5,084 yards in a season. That's pretty amazing.
