I think it's a testament to the parity that's developed in college football. Alabama barely squeaked by Middle Tennessee St. last week at home... then comes very close to beating the #2 or 3 team in the country on the road! With scholarship limits, the gap is closing between those schools in traditionally weak conferences, and those in the powerhouse conferences. If anything, I feel a little better about Texas's somewhat unconvincing 27-0 win over North Texas, which is basically Mid. Tenn. St's equal in talent. Not sure if anyone noticed, but #4 Tennessee struggled with Mid. Tenn. St. also this weekend. It was 26-3, but was was more hard fought than the score would indicate. Tennessee only scored 2 offensive TD's against them, and gave up over 100 yards rushing.

There was a time when Bama, Texas, OU, USC and the like, could give out as many scholarships as they wanted to. Their 3rd string teams could have whooped North Texas. The playing field is a lot more level now with the 85 scholarship limit. The doormat schools don't necessarily get the best talent, but some very good athletes are either choosing these schools now, instead of riding the pine at a big school.... or being the odd man out because the big school already has reached it's limit of scholarships, and going to a small school with a chip on their shoulder, to prove the powerhouses wrong.
