How can I not reply to this? I can't say I was the hugest Oates fan. So I don't want to post something here about how much admiration I have and blah blah blah. Truth is, he was often a real jerk to the media, in spite of his guise as this great man of God. The way it went with Oates was, if you were a big time reporter in town, or a regular beat writer, you were OK. But any interloper was subject to a tirade or ridicule, especially if said reporter asked a "stupid" question.
However, I will also tell the better side while I am at it. I can't remember the year, I think it was 1996. As the team broke from spring training, Oates' wife Gloria was ill. I can't remember off hand with what, some form of mental problem, a panick attack or some such. I guess most of us would have done this, but I really can't think of a head coach/manager doing it. His wife wasn't in a life threatening situation, but he wanted to be with her in her time of need. So Johnny Oates took a week off to go home and stay with his wife. That doesn't seem like much now, but it has stayed with me. I think Johnny Oates is a good man. Sometimes, good men do bad things, and maybe the occasional tirade at a reporter is an example of that.
My prayers will be with him. My prayers will be with Gloria. My thanks go out to him, not only for leading my favorite team to it's only 3 playoff births in their history, but for giving me an example of what a man's priorities should be.
