Well, my worst fear was that in this off season, Hicks would hire Dan Duquette, who would then bring in Carl Everett. I guess we cut out the middle man.
I am actually going to miss Darren Oliver. He was a bad pitcher, but he is a stand up guy. He never hid from the media after another all too rough start. He never makes excuses. One quick Oliver story.
This season, while he was on the DL, The Rangers had an odd problem. Their normal TV play by play guy was hospitalized in Tampa. One of the radio guys, Vince Catronio filled in on the TV side, and on the radio, the Rangers turned to their injured pitcher for the job. I liked hearing Oliver do color, but the cool part was during the game, the Rangers pitcher, I wanna say it was Doug Davis or Ryan Glynn, was taking FOREVER in between pitches. Oliver noted this, and the Rangers fabulous radio play by play guy, The Great Eric Nadel, pointed out that he had to put up with this all of the time, and that Oliver was one of the worst offenders. This was all jovial, Nadel isn't very in-your-face. Oliver hadn't noticed that he himself usually took long in between pitches. He made it a point to throw, catch, and throw again, rather than take all that time doing nothing. He actually pitched better for a while too.
As far as Everett goes. I am not sure he is too much better than Kapler in center, he has had exactly 2 really good years. He has a bad knee it seems, and that isnt going to help things much.
Last year, Kapler was better in pretty much all offensive catagories. Both seem to have injury problems, but in a general sense, Kapler is young and should get better, Everett is 30 and probably wont improve. He might go back to his form of 99 and 2000, but that would be about as good as he can expect to be.
So, I would say, if I were building a team, I would probably prefer Kapler. None of what I have said has mentioned off the field issues. Everett is a known jerk. He seemingly lacks that function of the brain that transfers anger into action. He can't just seethe about stuff, he has to yell, kick, cuss, badger and whine about every injustice, percieved or otherwise. He quits on his team, he is a disruptive force in the locker room, and doesnt respect his manager, coaches, GM's etc. Kapler is just the oposite. He is a work out warrior, goes balls out on every play, is great with teamates, fans, media, and has an engaging personality. If I could get a woman drunk enough to have children, I would have no qualms with leaving them with him.
So, there is the comparison. I realize that Gabe will probably stay here and play right field, unless he is in part of a trade for pitching. I don't think that the Rangers are much farther ahead than they were before the trade. All they have added is a potential derisive force in the locker room, and on a team built on "good" guys, a black eye waiting to happen, publicly.
