I think the idea behind the trade was this. Pena is ready now, but the Rangers had no place to put him. They risked stunting his developement and attitude by having him toil in the minors for another year. Jason Hart looks to need another year in AAA, and sure he stumbled last year, but the year before he was the Minor League Player of the Year. This also frees up that logjam at the corner infield positions that the Rangers had on the farm. I think Texiera will be the one to move to 1st, and Blalock is the clear cut 3b of the future. All that said, I really think this trade could end up biting the Rangers in the ass for a long time.
On Newburg's report, he mentioned the Rangers could be doing here what the Yankees did when they traded Mike Lowell to the Marlins and got Yarnell and compay, who they later used in trades to fill holes. The Yankees had a good prospect who they just didnt have a place for and dealt him for guys who weren't as talented as Lowell was, but together one of them might emerge to be as good as he is.
I guess I wish Hart (actually, Fuson was the main man in this deal) had gotten more pitching for someone like Pena though.
Also, Ludwick is supposed to be pretty good, at least unless someone is throwing a breaking ball at him.
One more thing... this is more towards JP though, have you forgotten about Shawn Green? Don't get me wrong.... I usually forget about him too, but he is a pretty good hitter. I agree with you here though that the Dodgers really didn't get enough for Sheffield.
