With the addition of Sheffield and Chipper Jones to the outfield Atlanta will field the best overall outfield in baseball. Between the two of them will be Andruw Jones and if anyone has to ask about him they are not following baseball. On the outfield bench will be veteran B.J.Surhoff and George Lombard, a second year man.

Vince Castillo is coming in to play 3rd in place of Chipper and carries a better glove. He will also hit well enough. The Braves allstar SS (Furcal) is back from surgery and they are well fixed at 2nd base with second year man (Marty Giles). Lopez is back behind the plate and the only soft spot on the team is at First base. Pitching looks good again.

Keep this name in mind. Wilson Bettemit will in all likelihood, make the team. He is a natural SS and if he does make the starting lineup he will be at SS and Furcal will move to 2nb, where he plays equally well. Giles will become one of the most talented bench warmers in baseball.

Giles not only plays second very well, he has some pop in his bat. He's expected to hit 20 to 25 dingers this year and will be difficult to dislodge. It's more likely to be Betemit on the bench. Spring training will be interesting.

The Braves are really blessed up the middle for a number of years to come with 3 real keepers, all in their early twenties.

However, in our area I think the Mets improved the most and the NL East race in 2002 should be a doozy.
