Like Christians can't prove there is a God, Atheists cant prove there is no God. As an Atheist, I BELIEVE there is no God, just like you BELIEVE there is a God. Without proof no one can be sure.

I am European, and here Christianity is sort of the standard religion. I was baptised shortly after birth and raised as a Christian, without having a real choice. I regret the choice my parents made, although I am pretty sure they also made the choice out of tradition, since we almost never went to church.
Catholic schools raised me by the bible, but my interest had always been science, and as my education went on, I came to understand that religion was originally created to explain events that could not be explained at that time. The first religions had a god of thunder to explain thunder etc. Science showed me that nature is composed of laws, and experimentaly, these laws can be veryfied. Often these are contradictory with the bible. Certain events in human history also made me doubt the existance of a God.
I know I believed in god when I was a kid, but I am far of Christianity now. Of course there can be a God, but I would be surpised if so.

So , as an answer to your question, my answer would be :
An atheist is someone who BELIEVES God does not exist, and not "someone who KNOWS god does not exist"
