Usually the "big" movies (up for Oscar contention) are released in November and December in limited release. They release them at the end of the year in just the major cities (ometimes only NY and LA) to qualify for nominations. Then they open up into general release in January. Maybe the studio has really high hopes for this movie being really good! Let's hope so.
Sometimes studios hold films for varying reasons. Mybe post production problems or reshooting. Or there may be a similar film or too many other films released near the same date they don't want it to compete with. Perhaps the subject matter was deemed more appropriate for winter when the bulk of the heavy dramas come out. What was the original planned release? Spring or summer?

If the film is complete they might have had test screenings already and they could have changed the date based on feedback, or changed something in the film too!

But in general, late year release movies are considered the strong ones. If it's now planned for Nov/Dec I think that's a good sign.
