not leaving the series at the end of season eight, like DD did?? Because I think there is a widespread perception that "X-Files went downhill fast when David Duchovny was no longer involved." Which is *true*, as far as it goes, but I think it would have been just as bad if GA had left while DD stayed.
If they'd *both* left at the end of season eight, people would have to give them equal credit for the series initial success, and neither of them would have been associated with its decline. By sticking around after DD had left, IMHO, GA got herself identified with both the success *and* the eventual failure of the series, while DD is only associated with the successful seasons.
