Subject: I actually think. . .

that, while it is probably true that he wanted a chance to try different kinds of roles and work with different directors, the *main* reason DD wanted out XF as a TV series was that it conflicted to much with his most important role: that of husband and father. When he began work on XF he was single and childless; for most people at that point their job, if it is challenging and enjoyable, is the main focus of their lives. Once you get married and *especially* once you have kids, a job is no longer the center of your existence. And, from what I've gathered, the shooting schedule he and GA had to maintain as the *only* two leads of an hour-long drama was pretty brutal. (They are actually the only two actors in TV history to carry an hour-long, two-person drama for seven seasons. Most long-running dramas are ensemble series, like "NYPD Blue" or "ER"; other hour-long shows with only two leads - like "Moonlighting" - only ran for four or five seasons.)
As much as I, as a fan, regret his decision to no longer be the lead actor on XF, as a human being, a wife and mother, I think he did the right thing in putting his family first.
The funny thing is, the sort of career/family thing is a subject of very heated debate right now in re my other favorite show, "JAG". In that show, the lead actor (David James Elliott, if you've never watched the show. Not quite in our darling DD's league, but definitely easy on the eyes. Must be something about that name!) renegotiated his contract to include a supporting role on the series for his wife. A lot of the fans are up in arms about this, as they feel it's putting a damper on the relationship between DJE and the female lead. (To put it in XF terms. . .think if it had been Tea playing Fowl Thing and DD insisting she remain part of the cast as part of the conditions for him to continue on the show; except it's not quite *that* bad, because DJE's wife doesn't play a former love interest of his on "JAG".)
Again, from a fan's POV this kinda bites but I think it's nice to see intelligent, attractive, successful men who actually *care* about making their marriages work. . .that seems to be sort of rare in Hollywood.
