Subject: What's with Asher?

Hi everybody. I have been reading all the Anita Blake books over again because I can't stand the wait on the next book. Anyway, I've been wondering about Asher. Now I really, really like Asher but I can't figure out why he stayed in St.Louis. At the end of Burnt Offerings he stilled supposedly hated JC's guts. The books have said Asher is strong enough to a master vamp of the city but he stays with JC. Now in NIC there is a part where Anita and Richard are sharing power and Asher walks up and she says "The power recognized him, flared stronger, as if he could act as our third..." I know Asher seems to still love JC but what if Asher is either a plant by the council or maybe he wants Anita or JC's triumverate. So maybe I'm just paranoid that something bad is going to happen to JC but what do you guys think?

Honestly, I think you are just paranoid. I keep worrying that something is going to happen to Asher. I seriously doubt that Laurell will ever kill off either Jean-Claude or Richard, so I worry more about my favorite supporting characters. Asher, Jason, Nathaniel...I will be highly pissed off if anything happens to them.

Asher stayed because of Anita...she looked on him without fear or revulsion and saw him as beautiful. And she showed him that Jean still loved him. Wouldn't YOU rather stay with people like that than go back home to those who had done nothing but revile, torment and ridicule you because your form was no longer "perfect?"

I know he loves Anita, but why would the council just let him stay? As sadistic as the council members are you'd think they wouldn't allow him to be with people who cared about him and showed him affection.

>I think the council has learned that you don't mess with the people on Anita's "list".
Asher is now on that list!! Still it might be neat to
see Anita and the boys go to Europe to get Asher back. and Traveler might get thrill out of the whole escapade.. He was neat in a weird sort of way.

I agree with you on that one. I've been paranoid ever since the very first book when Philip got killed. I was truely tramatized! I actually cried! I never cry while reading books! My sister got me reading these books. When I was done with Guilty Pleasures I was pissed at my sister. I was like, "You made me read this book! I liked Philip! You bitch!" She just laughed at me. Of course I read the rest of the books. But I am certainly more attached to some of the characters than I was to Philip so I worry about them. Philip's horrible death has scarred me for life, God help me. If JC or Asher got killed I probably have to curl up in my closet for a month and mourn. Okay, I know I'm sick!

No, I don't think you're sick. I'd probably do the same thing! That is after I got severely violent and injured someone. Then if it was Jason or Nathaniel or even the twins, I'd curl up for a month and mourn. If it was Jean-Claude or Asher, I don't think I'd ever recover. But surely Laurell wouldn't be that cruel to us. Would she?

Hi - I just finished re-reading NIC myself, and at one point in the book Anita asked JC why Asher didn't become Master of the City somewhere else (JC says Asher is powerful enough, even if he doesn't have an animal to call). At that time JC says that, "If there was a territory vacant in this country, and he would be welling to leave us, then yes, he might rise to Master of the City." Implying there aren't any "openings" and that Asher has freewill.

Until you said something, I hadn't even considered that the Council might have "kept" Asher. Is it more a case that the vamps are tied to the "masters" because they rise from their power (the masters)? Thus, if you have the power to rise on your own, you're free to pick your own allegiances, maybe? I dunno…guess I’m going to have start all over and re-read all the books…sigh. It’s a sacrifice…but no machetes, salt or goats required, so hey, I'm so there. ;)
