Prologue: Katcan Legends
Long ago, before the planet Katca existed, a family of immortal beings came into existence. Nobody knows from whence they came, or why. All that is known was passed down by generations of troubadours and storytellers, and now nobody is even sure of the truth in the tales. Perhaps the Girl of Fire never existed, or perhaps she was not what we think. But what is told says she was there, guided by the immortals who created her world.
At first, there were only eight, but eventually more came into existence. Together, the immortals combined their supernatural powers to create a home in a pocket of Elsewhere, the place that is, and yet isn’t, takes up no space, and yet is endless. Then they created a planet suitable for life, and seeded it with the beginnings of civilizations. They offered the world humans, animals of all kinds, plants, and natural laws that kept everything in balance. The beings made themselves known to the life of their planet, then sat back and watched it grow and develop.
The humans developed fastest. They produced speech, writing, and an alphabet to communicate with. They named their ruling beings and called them Gods and Goddesses. They named their planet Katca, and their realm Sharn. They spread over a great space, discovered the other beings, and made alliances and enemies. Eventually it was too much for one person to handle. They divided their realm into six pieces, naming each: Kriva, Mazerai, Talorai, Sylazi, Kk’Ali, and Palynai. A separate human controlled each piece, and all conferred annually.
Other creatures of the world, such as dragons, unicorns, gryffins, and others, also developed intelligence. Though all creatures had a little intelligence, these and humans developed far above them. Unfortunately, only the dragons, with their Gift of Tongues, could speak with the other races.
Several thousand years into the planet’s existence, something unexpected happened within Katca. A strange new being manifested itself among the others. The Gods watched as it lived parasitically within other beings, but only those who had developed intelligence. But though it lived within the other creatures, it did not harm them. Instead, it gave them odd abilities. The unicorns developed a miraculous healing ability, controlled through their horns. The dragons developed the power to fly between worlds, and telepathically control their surroundings. In some cases, entire new species evolved, such as phoenixes, the firebirds. Even humans acquired power, though theirs was nothing like that of the others. Their power consisted of three different types, two of which are divided into six subtypes. The humans came to call this strange power magic. The first type, called Soulmagic, is the most powerful, but is the only version of this power, and well known to be deadly to its host. It slowly feeds on its host’s soul, but provides unimaginable power. The second type, called Gift Magic, is divided into Truthmagic, Psymagic, Wildmagic, Mechamagic, Lightmagic, and Stitchmagic. It is easily controlled, though not very powerful. The third type, called Elemental Magic, is divided into Fire, Ice, Water, Plant, Lightning, and Earth powers. It is wild, unusual power, but deadly in the hands of an expert.
All of the magic races developed basic abilities, such as telepathic speech, and together developed a common language to speak among one another. They also created languages specific to race, and also linking similar powers, such as fire or water abilities. Once again, the dragons found that they knew each new language, though they knew Common, Draconian, and their own power best.
Though the humans thought they were the most powerful beings in existence, the Gods knew that wasn’t quite true. The dragons, unicorns, gryffins, and such were all more powerful than the humans were now. But, the Gods also knew that if the humans were to only open their minds, they would discover that their magic was all but limitless. The Gods kept this secret safe, though, for if the humans were to discover this, it could possibly mean the annihilation of the world. They also kept the information from Chimera, the goddess of mischief and chaos, as she would have loved to spread it all over to the wrong people.
The humans were getting restless, though. They all wanted more land to own, but there was nothing unowned that was within their reach. They grew more and more restless as the years rolled by, until they could hold back no longer. They began to strike one another down in a desperate war for land. They were destroying the very land they fought for, and the war seemed to have no end in sight. The Gods were getting desperate for an answer to this problem. The humans were now recruiting other races to help them defeat one another. Then the King of the Gods remembered the secret power locked safely away. Perhaps if they were to share this secret only with those who would use it for good, then the war could be stopped. Having decided this was their only hope, the Gods began a painstaking search for the humans who were destined to stop the war. They chose one from each subtype of magic, recruiting a total of thirteen. The humans called themselves Greatmages, and set out to stop the deadly war.
When the war was finally resolved, the Gods trapped the Spirit of War within Elsewhere. Karra, the Greatmage of Fire, left the world with her final words:
“War is a wild being, so be warned. No wild spirit will be trapped forever. When war once again wreaks havoc on the world, the Greatmages will once again come to end it. Always, Fire will be first to return and last to leave. Always, War will be defeated, no matter how long it may take. Goodbye for now, and peace to all.”
Several generations passed uneventfully. The bad blood was patched up between lands, and Karra settled down and lived long. She watched her children and grandchildren grow, and she watched the children of her friends grow. She left for the Realms of the Gods in her sleep, and her body was found smiling, satisfied with her long life.
Her legacy was all but forgotten, and the devastation of the Great War was left behind. But Karra’s strong-willed blood went on through the generations. The spirit of her cause would indeed return…
