"Sira, can you do me a favor?" Tianna asked.

Her blonde friend stopped in her way through the corridor and turned around, black cloak swirling around her in a very impressive way. Tianna had her suspicions that Sira had practiced that move in secret. She was that kind of person.

"If it doesn't take too long," she said cheerfully. "I've got big plans."

Tianna stepped out of the doorway to her room and walked up to Sira.

"They might have to be postponed," she said. "I'm sorry. This is important."

Sira's merry smiled disappeared.

"Now wait a minute…" she said.

"Look," Tianna said, "tomorrow we're going after Lord Tabaal, right?"

"And about damn time," Sira agreed.

Lord Tabaal was, quite frankly, a monster. Well, most vampires were, in fact all vampires were, per definition, but Tabaal was even worse than most of his undead kind. He captured and people and tortured them. For weeks, if he could make them live that long. And then, given the opportunity, he turned them into vampires. And kept on torturing them until they developed their own powers enough to escape him.

And his abilities were impressive enough that no one had managed to stop him. Yet. But Tabaal had yet to meet a group of vampire slayers as skilled as the one Tianna and Sira belonged to. Tabaal had yet to meet a Triangle.

"Yes," Tianna agreed. "But the spells and talismans we use won't do us much good against him. If we attack him as it is, he'll take control of us."

"Oh, I'm sure we'll find a way to avoid that," Sira said, unworried. "We always do."

And that, Tianna reflected, was why she was the leader and Sira was not. Had Sira been the leader, they would never have used any plans more complicated than 'charge!'

"I have found a way to avoid that," Tianna said.

"See?"

"There's a man in town who says that he knows a spell that nullifies Tabaal's powers. He says Tabaal held him prisoner once, but that he escaped by using that spell. Now, he might just be full of it, but everyone I've talked to says he's got marks and scars on him that looks a lot like Tabaal's handiwork."

Sira shrugged.

"So go ask him."

"No, you'll go ask him, because I don't have time. That's the favor I wanted."

Sira sighed.

"Right. Sure. Anything for you, oh sister in my heart. Where is he?"

"No idea," Tianna said. "I've just heard of him. You'll have to find him before you ask him. He's a local boy, and his name is Carn."

"Oh, come on! That could take all night!"

"I hope not," Tianna said, trying not to smile at Sira's miserable tone, "because I also want to find a certain mercenary named Bavon. Of Lis, if that might help."

"Carn and Bavon," Sira repeated. "Right. And why, if I may ask, do we want to talk to a mercenary?"

"He knows where Tabaal hides during the day. And he's bribable."

Sira nodded slowly.

"I see," she said. "Carn of Semerra and Bavon of Lis. Got it. Just one more question before I spend the night searching through this big, big city for your information."

Tianna smiled like a Queen granting a favor for a faithful minion.

"Certainly."

"Just why the Hell can't you do this yourself?" Sira said, almost casually.

"Because I have to buy equipment, I have to prepare potions, I have to convince a few hard-convinced people that it's in their interest to form a rescue party if we're not back at a certain time," said Tianna and counted the points off on the fingers of her left hand, "I have to… Actually, I have a list." She took a piece of parchment out of a pocket in her cloak, which was identical to Sira's except for the color, which was gray. The parchment was full of writing. "See?"

Sira glared at the list. Then she glared at Tianna. Then she smiled, in the victorious way of someone who has just remembered that there is an ace up her sleeve.

"You know, I had a feeling you'd try to put me up to something like this," she said.

"Did you, now?"

"I even foresaw that you'd try to intimidate me with a list."

"Hmm. I must be getting predictable…"

"So I've made a list of my own," Sira said triumphantly and produced a similar parchment from her own cloak. "See? This is what I've got to do tonight, so I don't have time to look for magicians and mercenaries, no matter how much I'd like to."

Tianna took the list and read.

"'One, eat way too much. Two, drink way too much. Three, try at least one of those Semerran drugs I keep hearing about'… Sira!"

Sira smiled innocently.

"Well, they're famous."

"They're famous for ruining lives and killing people. Don't you go near them."

"But…"

"No!"

Sira rolled her eyes.

"Fine. Forget number three, then."

"'Four,'" Tianna went on, "'find incredibly hot guy. Five'…" She stopped and blinked. "Okay, five specifies what you're going to do to the incredibly hot guy once you've found him, but I'm not going to say it."

"Your choice," Sira said, grinning.

"But 'until one of us gets permanent injuries'?" Tianna said, shaking her head.

"For the record, that'll be him. I just didn't want to sound cocky."

Tianna looked at Sira for fifty heartbeats without saying anything. Sira smiled shamelessly at her the whole time.

"Sira," Tianna then said slowly, "you're an intelligent woman…"

"Thank you, thank you."

"… well educated, wise in the ways of the world, that sort of thing…"

"Nice of you to notice."

"… and you've known me for, what, fifteen years or more…"

"Something like that, yes."

"… so what made you think this was going to work?"

Sira shrugged.

"Hope?" she suggested.

"I'm afraid the situation is hopeless," Tianna said flatly.

Sira sighed.

"Oh."

"I'll expect one spell and one hideout location by dawn, Sira," Tianna said and went back into her room.
