Hehe, im not sure where "here" is, but in the area i live in, abnormal isnt used often, if ever. You can think of it as a more extreme version of "unusual".. for example

a person with a hand sticking out of his head is "abnormal". (used to denote a medical state of such strangeness that it is almost never seen)

it would be "unusual" to see a man wearing a large coat in the summer. ("unusual" is a more casual term that people are used to hearing.)

Personally, either word is fine... and if you wanna write a book/story, its always good to use good vocabulary... and sorry if this doesnt make much sense. Im really depressed, and cant think very strait.
