Subject: The halls of Sheol

Okay. I admit it. Poetry is not my strong point. As a writer, I tend to be better at ideas than at descriptions; my normal strategy is to keep throwing information at the reader until I'm sure that I've gotten the message through. =] A poem, where every word must be exactly right, is very difficult for me.

That said: sometimes a poem enters my mind and demands to be written. This is such a poem.

***

I have felt the tearing chill
of losing all my faith,
I have heard the verdict
passed in my own voice,
I have seen the doors close
and keys forever lost,

in the halls of Sheol.

I have seen the dreary fields
where ancient hatred roam,
I have tasted the foul poison
brewed on dark despair,
I have felt the fires
burning through my soul,

in the halls of Sheol.

I have seen a white spark
whithin those darkest pits,
I have heard an echo
of laughter that was lost,
I have felt a yearning
of daring one more step,

in the halls of Sheol.

I have seen a highway
where once there was but gloom,
I have felt a warming hand
hold and guide my own,
I have smelled the sweet scent
of freedom beyond gates,

beyond the gates of Sheol.

I have seen a sunrise
breaking through the night,
I have heard the clicking
of prison locks unmade,
I have felt the freedom
of one whose soul was saved,

and taken far from Sheol.

I have had the truth revealed
and I never will forget,

and never more see Sheol.
