Subject: Making a story more unique

I'm currently writing a novel, but as I read more books written by successful authors I realize that my basic plot isn't as original as I'd like.

Now, don't get me wrong, the crisis themselves are very original, but the basic storyline itself. Like the skeleton of the story. Now I'm asking for your help on it.

Here's the basic storyline:
An evil power that exists in varying times for one person alone in the whole of Aia imbues itself in a Dwarf. The Dwarf excels at the art of combat, and becomes interested the mystics of the world.

He masters it, and strengthens his magical abilities to the point where it is a major part of his very existance. It becomes one of the three things of life, muscle, mind and soul. Without one, the others are useless and life is no longer.

Eventually, he is subverted, and with the magic, he extends his life much longer than the expected thousand years. He defies death, and eventually conquers it. Now, power hungry, he begins his reign in an isolated country to the North of Mirtane, as to draw little attention. But now he is the largest known threat to Aia since the Dark Lord Thorleif.

(This is the first problem, a Dark Lord, a threat to the existance of the world, used plenty of times before in many great books. LoTR for one)

Yet there is hope, a legendary weapon was forged milleniums ago that had been fused with magic. It's balance was between real and ethereal, the only weapon in Aia that was the exact equal to one who had strengthened their magic power to the point of if strengthened further, the magic would take over the other three sources of life.

Unfortunately, the weapon was lost, and its master thought to be killed in the raid that razed his city, the city of Goalai. By chance, two travellers meet an enigma of an Elf in the ruins of the city.

As they reach the council of Mirtante being held in the Leprechaun city of Sindicion, the truth is revealed. The Elf is the last survivor of the raid, and its King, the master of the sword.

A party is erected to aid him to retrieve the sword. It was hidden by himself in a forest within the depths of Mithdori. When they reach the forest, they find it desolated and the sword has been taken by the Sorcerer Ronsewod. Now they must follow the raiding party back to Ronsewod's realm in the south.

(Second problem. A brave, dangerous journy undertaken by the to-be heroes of the world if successful. Used in countless fantasy books.)

Running out of time so I'll just give you the rest, so far I've been typing it like a story, now I'll give it to you normally. My third problem is how it is going to end. The bearer of the sword kills the bad guy, and the enormous army flees when his hold on their minds is released. The army gathered is up against enormous odds, like they ALWAYS are. What can I do for that?

Well those are the major problems that I would appreciate some help on. If you have a similar problem just post it here I'm sure you'll get some help, I'll do what I can.

Btw, I have two sideline stories that come together with the main one in the end. One's a romance and the other is like a war one. It ends up not only are they chasing, but also being chased. This dark dwarf finds out about their expedition and sends his head tracker with a group of assassins to chase them. They also make an upset at an enemy Fort and the commander disbands his whole army to chase after them.
