I'm not not sure at all, but you could try editing keyboard.txt (its in the Plugins folder). Maybe this is a configuration file wich Premiere reads every time its started, so you can alter Premiere's pre-defined key combinations at your own preferences.

You could try replacing all 'Escape' words in it by something else (say F12, or a key combination such as q,bSHIFT; I think the b in bSHIFT stands for 'both').
But as I mentioned I'm not sure (haven't tried it myself) so you better first make a backup copy of that file.
