Both of your problems sound (to me, NOT an NGCI) like you're trying to force the release to happen. Normally, when I hit fat shots, it's because I'm releasing the right hand too soon in attempt to "kill" the ball. The thin slices could happen if you haven't allowed the release to happen soon enough (the clubhead would not be all the way down because the right hand is holding the shaft up, and the face would still be open). Also, if you're rotating the clubface open on the backswing, you're making more work for yourself to close it on the downswing.

When I have a "good" swing working, the clubface is pretty much perpendicular to the clubhead path for a l-o-n-g distance at the bottom of the swing -- that's what I like about NG! I have more room to be slightly off with my timing and still hit a straight shot.

What I do to fix these kinds of problems is:

#1: make sure my tempo is sound! Get a feel for a lazy pendulum swing, back and forth, with NO manipulation of the club to release it. Just keep your wrists loose. Then gradually add a little cock back and release into the swing. DON'T RUSH THE BACKSWING!! DON'T RUSH THE DOWNSWING!! Just think easy even tempo. Then try to hit the ball with exactly the same tempo--never think "kill the ball", always think "smooth tempo".

#2: I always want the clubface to move perpendicular to the path and level to the ground when I fold up my right elbow and (slightly) cock the wrists. Put yourself in an "impact" position, then relax your right elbow. Where does the clubhead go? If it goes up then I suspect you're not tilted away from the target (remember, you have to tilt forward towards the ball, and you have to tilt right as well). I want the amount of right tilt to be just enough to keep the clubhead path parallel to the ground when I relax and straighten my right elbow. This gives me a more "sweeping" swing (good for hitting off the tee).

#3: in keeping with the perpendicular to the path theme from #2, I work not to add any extra motions into my swing that I would have to "undo" on the downswing, other than moving the clubhead "straight" away from the ball (I realize that it's not really a straight line). I don't rotate the clubface open on the backswing and I don't rotate it shut on the downswing. When I hit a slice, it's either a swingpath problem, or I'm set up too close to the ball. When you cock your wrists, which way does the clubhead move? When I do it the clubhead moves back from the ball. But when my swing gets inconsistent, I work to remove any conscious wrist cock so I can get my timing back.

Anyway, I'm not an NGCI, and what I suggest isn't necessarily working on anything that Peter is telling you, so take what I say with a grain of salt...
