Subject: hypocritical exagerations

in class today the issue was brought up about many citizes inability to 'care about too many things' because we have to work (despite our nations wealth)constantly to maintain our lifestyle (ie house, clothing, food).
i want to start with a reality check:
1: americans have 8 hour work days and 5 day work weeks.
((of course the hours and days of labor increase the poorer individuals are--the working poor--...but we as students and graduates are not that part of that population!))
2:these labor reforms were brought, and fought for by international coilitions (non US citizens caring about international affairs), labor reforms where INSTITUTED and as a result we have things called THE WEEKEND, RETIRMENT, and SICK LEAVE.
im saying this to say that if we ((along with the rest of the industrialized world)) cannot use our lesure time--thats the +12 hours you're not at work--, to open our eyes and 'care' about the world we live in ( (and help to destroy)) then we are useless.
the term 'care' is i think the wrong word to use because infact carring is not enough. to activly pursue a better existance and work tangible toward that is what i mean when i say care. i do not doubt that people care as in worry periodically about things, but to take concern out of the theoretical realm and make it tangable is what carring really is. if our education is for nothing else it is to at least master that skill of making (often times bullshit) theories practical.
peace.
(please respond if you disagree)
