Subject: Democracy in Colombia

To go back to our Monday's discussion on Colombia, I have a hard time finding a efficient way to consolidate democracy and end the violence.
As we said, violence has replaced the rule of law and the ogovernment is not efficient in providing its people security and justice.
My question is how do we make the situation better, knowing the power of both paramilitary and guerilla groups.
I think the lack of legitimacy is defenitely something the government needs to get back. People need to trust their government and they need to feel it is efficient and aims at providing best for them. The government needs to be a role model. It needs first to give rid of corruption and clientelism. If the government is legitimate and show is acting for the good of tis people, then there is a chance that people will want to support it and show less support for Guerrilla-paramilitary groups.
I know the problem is more complicated than that, but I think that's a way to start. Then, something needs to be done about the drug traffic. But that's a very tricky issue, which does not only involve Colombia.
