Subject: Questions about versions

I know that the 4th edition seems to be recommended choice. What are the differences between the versions besides the rules updates? The counters and the maps are the same, right?

Also is there an easy way to tell the editions apart? I'm looking at some box covers on eBay and there seems to be some color differences on the boxes.
