SHAWNA KENT IS OUR SUDANESE CHOCOLATE

Shawna L. Kent, was born in San Diego, California and now resides in Decatur, Georgia. Shawna a writer, poet and performance artist has performed through out the cities of Los Angeles, Dallas and New York. Shawna is the author of WORDS a book of poetry and short stories and CLEO’S VERY SPECIAL DAY a children’s' book. Shawna has performed with such mainstream headliners such as the Sundance Film Festival actor and poet Saul Williams, Dione Ferris and The Last Poets. Shawna has hit the stage with her poetry entertaining such venues as The National Black Arts Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival and For Sisters Only. Constantly on demand as a performance artist Shawna travels with A Pen and A Paper a tour that promotes literacy and the arts through poetry at colleges through out the U.S.

Hard to compare to Shawna has competed in various slams such as the MARTEL SPEAK EASY SLAM judged by the infamous Whitman Mayo (“Grady” Sanford and Son) JOMANDI PRODUCTIONS SLAM FEST and V103 Joyce Lattel’s slams for charity. Her spoken words mixed over music can be found on the compilation
c.d. VIBE SESSIONS as well as featured on the c.d. A THIN LINE BETWEEN HIP-HOP AND POETRY. Shawna can often be found creating dialogue about
poetry and social issues on Georgia State University radio show “THE POETS GUILD”. Performing at Atlanta’s own 7 stages and Davage Auditorium she has
performed in the spoken word play “THE BLOCK; POETIC ASYLUM” and has currently written and produced her own one woman show 40 OUNCES AND TRAIL MIX; A LIFE LEFT GHETTO.

Not just a writer/poet but an activist of the arts Shawna has designed a creative arts program also known as C.A.P. that has brought countless public school students closer to the creative arts through their own imagination and C.A.P.’s direction. POETRY PASSPORT Shawna’s spectacular educational assembly designed for public schools has inspired students to find their creative passions. Shawna also a community activist has
facilitated programs such as VERBAL TEA and WRITE A WAY, art programs geared for mental health patients, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers and youth detention facilities.

Be on the look out for Shawna’s upcoming projects, which include the release of her research/novel project “CHASING MAMA THROUGH THE RITES OF THE
WIND” and “IF BLACK FOLKS COULD FLY TO THE MOON” a book of short stories and poetry.
