Mother called. Husband answered the phone and exchanged pleasantries. Then he handed the telephone over to me. My sister and baby are home and are doing fine.
So is dad and so is she. It didn't take long for mother to drop a bombshell. "I'm still smoking," she said. My thought was the long rigors or school without a cigarette for a smoker. I asked if she was going back to teaching Monday and she said yes.
We got into other things including a vivid description of the baby. The subject never returned to smoking. I did not tell her about our adventure with a cigar. Of course, I never intended to mention it. By the way, there was no progress on the home front so far today. I don't expect any either.
Mother and I talked for about 30 minutes before hanging up. Thank goodness for lower cost long distance. Before we hung up, I could hear what I thought was the click of her Bic.
After hanging up I told my husband mother said she was still smoking and planned to go back to school Monday after taking time off for the new grandchild.
"I know," he said. "I could hear when she lit up a cigarette when she first called." That sounds more like an addiction coming than a temporary relief of stress.
I am doing fine without smoking though. Just don't SHOUT becasue my nerves are a little bit on EDGE.
