(New York-AP) -- If you light up, New York's mayor wants you to pay up. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is proposing a dollar-42-cent-a-pack increase in the city's cigarette tax -- boosting the tax to a-dollar-50 a pack.
That hike -- combined with a scheduled 39-cent hike in the state tax -- would drive the average price of cigarettes in New York City to almost seven dollars a pack. Bloomberg says he wants to make cigarettes so expensive teen-agers won't be able to afford them.
A spokesman for tobacco giant Philip Morris says boosting the tobacco tax would only encourage commuters to buy their cigarettes closer to home and would prompt New Yorkers to go out of town to buy their smokes.
