The Adopted Child

Sadness gripped my heart as I was told the news
It�s unlikely you will ever bear a child
Not believing, I sought other doctors� views
but medical results were the same in each file

There were surgeries, injections, and pills
With each treatment came new tears
There were many long trips and medical bills
With each failure came more fears

In my heart, I felt all hope was gone
What more could be said or done
It was time to stop running hither and yon
I would never bear a daughter or son

�Why not try adoption?� Someone wisely said
Could we possibly love another�s child?
Many questions filled my head
Letters of inquiry were compiled

After two long years of agonizing wait
the phone rang one afternoon
The news quickly increased my heart rate
I learned we�d be parents soon

They came and placed her in my arms
She was tiny right down to her toes
I was soon captured by her charms
She had beautiful eyes and a button nose

I am grateful to the one who gave her birth
This child made us a family tightly knit
The love of our daughter has so much worth
She didn�t grow under my heart, she grew in it
