This is a recent re-write I did - I took two poems and created them 'as one'. I definitely do like critique as well as feedback, so if you, as the reader, have any suggestions, feel free to give them.

i

mid-afternoon
rain-scent heavy
under pines

many birds speak at once

i try to imagine
the meaning
of their converse

something to do
with the coming
storm, i expect

i return to where my work
awaits; much of it has to do
with these birds - this nature

much of it has to do
with this very airy scent of rain

ii

after the storm, i return;
the birds are still speaking

it is likely they are organizing,

their plan, i'm sure, is to descend
en masse, plucking unsuspecting
worms that struggle to the surface
after the rains have fallen

iii

stupid worms; they do not know
the danger in their quest

but i cannot pretend to know
what it is the birds speak of, nor do
i speak a fluent worm

i take my content in smoking
on the bench beside the big fir,
watching drops of rain fall
from leaves - watching worms
as they rise to meet their fate
under sharp sparrow-speak
