Axe Moon

The sickle shape of the moon,
like the sharpened edge
of the Headman's axe,
poised in readiness to strike.

Behind the darkness of his hood
He lurks, evil eyes glowing.
The darkness, all-consuming,
is lit by firefly glitters,
as if the steel is reflected
in the mirror of his soul.

He loves his work.
You can see it in his stance,
in the sharpness of his blade,
the way he carresses the handle.

The sickle moon hangs in darkness,
poised to strike, blade sharp
against the backdrop
of the headman's dark cloak.

See it, the honed crescent edge?

As day is beheaded
And the plunge into darkness,
complete...
