I remember as a child
going to the lake for a swim.
I was perhaps all of three,
happy in the shallows
as a three year old would,
when I noticed my father
in water waist deep.
�How deep�s the water� I asked
�Over your head son better stay back�

The years passed slowly,
I was probably about eleven.
Another memorable trip to the lake
and I�m starting to learn how to swim.
My fathers head bobbed in the waves
�How deep�s the water� I asked
�Over your head son better stay back�

A few more years passed,
I�ve grown into a young man.
I have learned how to swim
at least in the deep waters of a lake,
but it finally dawned on me
it wasn�t the water Dad spoke of
when I asked how deep it was,
for his reply was the same,
�Over your head son better stay back.�

I have now reached middle age,
haven�t been swimming in a while
at least not in the local lake.
Dad is up there somewhere
swimming in heavens waters,
and I hear the echo of his voice,
�Over your head son better stay back.�
