GROSSE ILE -- Back to basics.
Grosse Ile did just that and cruised to a 73-49 victory over Gibraltar Carlson in a Class B district game Tuesday night.
"It's a new season now, so it"s back to basics," Grosse Ile Coach Keith Rydzik said. "We run a flex offense and play tough man defense. It's that simple. It's been our bread and butter all year the last two years.
"And this was probably the first time we had a completely healthy team."
And it continued to help Grosse Ile, as the Red Devils improved to 17-4. The team has lost just twice since Christmas, once in double overtime and the other by one point.
Tuesday, Grosse Ile went ahead 21-13 in the first quarter, and took control early in the second. The Red Devils used a 15-4 run to lead, 41-23 at halftime.
"Our goal was to play good, tough man-to-man defense in the first half," Rydzik said. "We were able to shut down their two best players in Kevin Gish and Paul Collins."
Carlson cut the lead to 15 at the start of the third quarter, 46-31, but didn't get any closer. Grosse Ile ended the third with a 10-2 run, taking a 58-37 lead.
"We did some good things tonight," Carlson Coach Max Bailey said. "But we got into foul trouble early with our best inside player and our quarterback out there.
"We definitely played hard. Unfortunately, we didn't shoot the ball as well as other nights. We struggled to get good looks. We made a run to start the third and that gave us a lift. But Grosse Ile did a good job. Zach Everingham and Ivan Mahanic are as good as ever."
Everingham, who has signed to play for Detroit Mercy next year, scored 14 points, while Mahanic tallied 22 points, including 10 in the second half.
"We feel Zach is one of the best guards in the state," Rydzik said. "He does it all and he sees the floor so well. He really delivers the ball where guys can score and he"s an awesome defender.
"Ivan is the Huron League MVP. He shoots at such an incredible range that it just spreads the defense out."
Kevin Dombrowski added 23 points and 12 rebounds. Lance Palarmara added 11 points and six boards.
"Lance had a great game," Rydzik said. "He's really been our unsung hero all year. He's a tough rebounder and always guards the top shooter. And Dombrowski had a good game. It helps when you have Zach and Ivan throwing the ball to you.
"We shot the ball well tonight, but this is a good senior group. They all play well together."
Carlson was paced by Collins" 13 points while Gish added 10 and Nick Jaeger had nine.
"We competed as hard as we could today," Bailey said. "I can"t find fault with the effort. And really only four teams end the season they way you want to end it. I really wanted to win this game, just so I could keep coaching my four seniors."
Grosse Ile advances to face Erie Mason Thursday at 7:00 at Grosse Ile.
