On this eve of the Horizon League Championship game, we are left with two favored, yet highly undeserving, teams vying for their ticket to the big dance. The two semifinal games which Butler and Wisconsin-Milwaukee won were complete travesties, which simply exposed the political corruption and overall ineptitude of the Horizon League. Whenever two defensive teams meet, especially those as renown for their ball pressure as Butler, there are going to be a lot of fouls called. However, if Butler is playing in the conference tournament and unwilling to repeat last year’s first round exit, they are apparently allowed to slap, smack, and hack without fear of penalty. Detroit went to the line only once the entire game, whereas Butler took 19 shots, making 15 and winning by 3. Where is the justice? We also see another blatant corrupt game that same night, with UIC taking on Milwaukee. After taking the lead, UIC is called for a highly questionable technical late in the game, setting up a two point Milwaukee win. The referees even left the court before the game was officially over, as the fans rushed the floor. With this game’s questionable calls, and the absolute travesty of officiating in the Detroit-Butler game, something definitely stinks in the Horizon League. All signs point to Commissioner Jon LeCrone. His body language, as well as his actions, at the tournament are enough to implicate his role in what can only be game-fixing. He was seen angered at Detroit’s victory over Loyola in the quarterfinals, while joyous at Butler’s win the next round. With Detroit leading at the half of said semifinal game, LeCrone made a little visit to his referees during half-time, probably forcing them to call the game for Butler. This is especially sad since it was possibly the last game in the careers for Titan greats Willie Green and Terrell Riggs, who, along with their teammates, played their hearts out and dominated the game, outplaying Butler throughout. It is terrible knowing that these seniors, who deserve so much more, have to go out like this. It seems that Titan fans have put up with a lot over the years, but enough is enough. When your own league commissioner wants your team to lose and fixes games to make sure of it, it is time to leave. The Detroit Mercy organization must wise up and back out of the Horizon League, while exposing the conference’s corruption. Why not join up with the A-10? It seems that that conference is pretty upset at St. Bonaventure. Maybe there will be an opening soon. Going independent is even a better option than sticking it out with this current joke of a league. Either way, Detroit would be able to get away from LeCrone and his evil, game-fixing ways.
