Subject: WORLD MASTERS

Melbourne, Australia will be hosting the World Masters Games in October 2002 and are looking to introduce Canoe Polo to the competition. Is anyone in NZ interested?

The World Masters Games is an international event open to amateur athletes 35 years and older as determined at 31 December 2002. The games offer an opportunity for sports people to get together, socialise and compete at an international level. You can learn more at the web site: www.2002worldmasters.org.

Organisation of the games is well under way but, at present, there is no scheduled canoe polo competition. If canoe polo is to be added to the games, we must lodge an application by the end of July 2000. To conduct a canoe polo competition in our own right, we need around 250 players (local and international). Failing this, we can enter under the sprint canoe umbrella with around 100 players.

The age categories for men and women are: 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70+. However, we can nominate different groupings if needed. Entry fees are not yet known, but it is recognised that previously they have been unreasonable and so are expected to be somewhat less this time.

If you are interested to participate in the World Masters Games – Canoe Polo. Please call Ian Beasley. We need to gauge the level of interest promptly so that we can register the sport with the organising body. We only have one month to do this. Please circulate this note to whoever you think may be interested.
