§Venus leaps from her cover of brush onto the back of the deer, something like a cowboy riding a bronco in a rodeo. The deer, surprised at the sudden weight, begins to run but collapses under Venus. Venus sets her jaws on the spinal column, grinding the bone crushing teeth on the vertebrae. The deer dies instantly and Venus leaps off her kill, too tired to eat, and lies on the ground panting. She beckons to Bazzel to go ahead and eat his fill. She guards him and the deer from anyother hunters. Even Poseidon.§
