As she spoke of their daughter, the full brunt of what he'd done to their family began to materialize to him. It was one thing to agonize over it from afar...but to see the emotional wreckage he'd caused not only his wife, but his daughter too? It was so very much worse.

"We have to tell her the truth. You did what you thought was best for her...she'll have no one to hate but me." While he loved the daughter he'd barely known with every once of his being, he would gladly shoulder the full weight of her hatred, if it meant deflecting it from her mother. "Nothing about this is going to be easy, Angelina." He took a deep breath, running a hand through his hair. The words she spoke to him hurt, but he wouldn't blame her. Yet there would be no way to keep him from their daughters life. He thought of the birthday and Christmas cards he had, neatly stacked in a closet in his run down apartment...words written for the both of them that he'd never had the courage to send. God, he hated himself. "She deserves to know who her dad is and what he did. What she does with that...I can't control. But she deserves the truth. My truth." His dark eyes dropped to the floor. "I think we have bumpy ground to cover before we even begin talking about you taking me back. I'm not expecting it, you know." He glanced at her. "It's something I hope for, but I don't expect it. Years worth of damage has been done. All we can do is hope to heal it." He tenatively offered a small, half hearted grin. "Hope's a good thing to hold onto you know." It had been keeping him afloat for years.
