“Hey, Alli. Can Elie ride Witch for a little while?” Susan said, smiling wickedly. “Mom, she’s being really wild and well…” Alli said, when Elie suddenly interrupted. “I can straighten her out.” Elie said confidently. “Yes, Alli, I’m sure Elie can manage her quite easily.” Helen said, winking at the teen. “Oh, you’re right. Here you go.” Alli said, smiling handing Susan the mare’s reins. Witch tossed a playful buck as Helen helped Elie mount. “Now this is more like it. Look, Susan, you’re daughter couldn’t handle this mare, but I am having no trouble.” Elie said. Witch had her head low, but you could still see that twinkle in her eye. “I am going to canter!” Elie announced, digging her heels sharply into Witch’s sides. The mare flung her head up and galloped full force towards the fence. She gathered up and leapt over it, stretching gracefully over the fence. Elie screamed as she slipped off and landed with a thud. Witch slowed to a canter and pranced into the barn, where Alli yelled, “I got her!” Susan and Helen rushed to Elie’s side. The girl was laying stunned on the ground, her long blond hair spilling out of its ponytail. “I can’t believe you put me on that DEVIL!” The teen said in outrage. “Now, Elie. Please, try to think clearly. You were a little harsh to her.” Helen said patiently. “I WAS NOT TOO HARSH! I WAS RIDING!” Elie yelled, throwing a tantrum. “Yes, you were.” Helen said in a voice that meant ‘It’s over’. They helped Elie up and then took her to the barn…
