In reply to: Freddo 's message, "1st grade: Gordon v Balmain (Day 1)" on 18:30:50 02/18/01 Sun

Balmain won this tight encounter to go to the top of the table with one round to play.

Resuming after being 1/3, Balmain lost Nerida Walker to a broken finger suffered the day before playing second grade to then be 2/3. Leonie Coleman and Kate Walsh batted patiently before Walsh was out to the spin of Lisa Sthalekar. The next batter (Elly) didn't last long, bowled between her legs by Bronwyn Calver. At 4/40 odd, Gordon looked a chance.

Sarah Stephenson joined Coleman and they took the score to 60 odd before Coleman was brilliantly caught by Sthalekar at cover off the bowling of Alex Blackwell for 38. This was a good comeback for Blackwell after Coleman had taken 12 (including a 4 and a 6) off her first over.

"Swampy" Marsh was next in but didn't last long as she was caught behind off Sthalekar's arm ball.

Captain Julie Hayes steadied the innings with Stephenson before she was caught at mid on off the bowling of Sthalekar.

Tiffany O'Neill came in and played a short but effective innings before she was caught by Gen Whitlam at deepish midwicket, again off Sthalekar.

In the end, Balmain snuck past Gordon's score 8 wickets down before being all out for 136.

Stephenson was the backbone of the innings after Coleman's departure and top scored for the game with 43no.

Sthalekar finished with 4/45 off 22 overs while Calver finished with 3/27 off 32 overs.

The final round sees Balmain playing Mosman - a sure victory and the minor premiership with a berth in the final - and Bankstown playing Gordon - a preview of the semi final.
