Subject: Size of trebles for pike (dead bait)

The size of trebles for dead baiting for pike as recommended in UK literature (e.g. Gibbinson, Rickards, Bailey and Page and the PAC-leaflet) is usually 6 or 8. Sometimes even size 10 is used. To me a size 4 or even 2 would seem much more realistic for a proper hook-hold on any pike of over say 15 lbs. I usually use a size 4 treble and a size 2 single on a homemade Fred Buller Universal rig, baited with sardine. What would be the reasoning behind the awfully smal hooks many British writers advocate? Sympathy for the pike's well-being? Surely not if the hook tears out of its flesh for being to tiny? That is, if it succeeds to establish a hook-hold in the first place. Can anybody enlighten me on this subject?
