Now is an ideal time to looking for features. The water has dropped so much that many shelves and features have been left exposed. Have a look about and imagine what the area looks like after a few weeks of rain (sooner rather than later I hope) and the levels are back to normal. There will also be heavy weed growth where there previously was none. Once the water level rises again, these areas will hold Pike since cover is first on thier agenda.
If the water is upto a normal level, you will have to "plumb" the water. A large weight is slid up the line followed by a bead. Now tie on a large-ish float. Mark the rod with a piece of tape or some Tippex (comes off with the back of a fingernail) a foot from the handle. This is your guide.
Cast to you chosen spot and allow the weight to sink freely. Now slowly wind the float down till it hits the weight. Now pay out line a foot at a time. Now you know why you have a 12" marker on the rod. When the float hits the suface you will have a fairly accurate indication of the depth. Easy. It only takes a few casts to build up a mental picture of the depths you are fishing in.
What you can also do is simply tie a Arlesey Bomb to the line and cast it out beyond your chosen spot. Reel in the weight very slowly and keep the rod up high. The weight will bump and grind and drag its way in over your chosen area. This will give you and idea of the terrain you are fishing in. If you don't know what certain terrains feel like, cast round the margins in various places till you "feel" or understand all the taps and bumps. Pick some gravely spots and some muddy parts. You will soon understand how the weight behaves at distance when you pull it through different areas.
Sometimes you can look at a faceless bit of water and it is easy to dismiss it as being featureless. A few casts with a plumbing setup can totally cahnge that idea. There may be a sunken boat, a shelf, a weed bed, a slight undulation...whatever. Pike will take advantage of such places and you never know...you might find a lie that noone else casts at.
