Acknowledgement

O’Doherty-Mary Ellen, nee Hegarty, born, Balee, Strabane, died June 16 2007, in her hundredth year. The children of the late Mrs. O’Doherty and her extended family circle at home and abroad, wish to thank most sincerely all those who have sympathised with them in their recent sad bereavement. We wish to thank relatives, friends, neighbours, former political prisoners, campaigning groups abroad and local community leaders, who brought gifts, sent floral tributes, sympathy and Mass cards, called at the house, and attended the funeral, or helped in any way.

We especially wish to thank local clergy, including Bishop Edward Daly, who led prayers at the wake, and Fr. Gerard Mongan who officiated at the Requiem Mass at St. Eugene’s Cathedral which was a very personal and memorable celebration of Mary Ellen’s long, fruitful and community-orientated life. Musical tributes, including Gaelic laments, were kindly played and sung by local close friends of the family, Áodan Dorach O’Donnghaile, Risteard McGabhann and Pádraigh O’Mianáin who provided a piece specially composed for her Requiem Mass.

We extend profound thanks to the firm of Bradley and McLaughlin, William Street, for their attention to detail and above all the dignified and courteous way in which they conducted all of the funeral arrangements.

Our thanks also to those who cared for our mother, grandmother and great-great grandmother in the final years of her life. These include our own family doctors, paramedics, hospital doctors, specialists, x-ray staff and nurses whose skills were required in those final few days at Altnagelvin Hospital. In this regard also we remember with fondness others who provided caring services at our home and at the Foyleville and Seven Oaks day-centres, in latter years.

As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, we trust all, as a token of our sincere appreciation will accept this acknowledgement. Masses are being offered, at home and abroad, for their intentions.

Go raibh maith agat.

The O’Doherty family, ‘Knockavoe’, Crawford Square, Derry City
