First off, I have to back up my sister in noromo-hood, kande. Preach it girl! It's all platonic.

When you look at how fashionably Scully dressed in later seasons of the show (especially her running from bees outfit from the movie, I need that jacket), it's hard to believe the way she used to dress. In this episode alone, we have three horrible outfits. The previously mentioned white hose, the horrible lacey getup she wore on her date, and that leather vest/tapered pants outfit from the birthday party. Despite the outfit, though, I thought she looked amazingly beautiful at the birthday party. Her hair looked good and her skin was amazing. We all know she's always beautiful, but she just stood out to me in that scene.

I agree that the date was patronizing. Shut UP, Poor Man's Dennis Quaid! Going on and on about your son and being a super dad on the weekends. This really has nothing to do with the episode, but I hate dating. It's so stupid. People putting on an act to make themselves appeal to others while hiding their faults. It's all so ridiculous. Scully apparantly agrees with me, since she was in a big hurry to ditch this bore, and doesn't go on another date until Ed Jerse.

It never fails to crack me up the way Mulder takes the homeless man's drawing as hard evidence of the neanderthal woman. He whips it out at the police station as though the sheriff will see it and say, "You're right! Look at this drawing! It's clear to me now!"

Like kande said, this is the first of many times we'll see Scully long for a "normal" life, but torn because Mulder sees his quest as normal and therefore can't give her what she needs. You have to love Mulder's "I have a life." Scully's decline of Poor Man's Dennis Quaid's offer of another date is symbolic of her decision to follow Mulder. This is, of course, not because she loves him or wants to be with him in any way more than partners and friends ;-)

As far as Mulder's characterization in this episode, we see further evidence that Mulder is very self absorbed. From his sarcastic "what, do you have a date?" to Scully, to him asking her if she can cancel her date to stick around New Jersey. I don't see this characteristic to be negative, necessarily, but I think we can all agree that it would lead to frustrating situations.

I have a few nitpicks. In the Pilot (I think) and most definitely in later episodes, Mulder's office appears to be all alone, among storage and such. In one episode Skinner visits and comments that he hasn't been down there since it was the copy room. But in this episode, Mulder and Scully walk right out of the office and into a bustling bullpen type area where there are tons of other FBI agents all working. What's the deal with that? Also, towards the end of the episode, Mulder, Scully, the park ranger, and the college professor walk into a building. They seem to believe that the neanderthal woman will be in there. Why? On what are they basing that? Did I just miss it?
