They had the 100 best films, the 100 best actors (50 men & 50 women all of whom had to have started before 1950 or had started after and since died), 100 comedies, 100 thrillers(sort of horror and suspense together) and now 100 romances. I believe African Queen was in there.

I know Bogart and Hepburn were the top 2 actors. Psycho was the #1 thriller. Some Like It Hot was the #1 comedy. Citizen Kane was the #1 film overall. Usually critics pick Kane but Gone With the Wind is the pick of the general public.

Kane is big with those in cinema studies since it opened up new possiblities in technique as well as story. And its really dark for 1941.

Foreign films: love Truffaut especially The 400 Blows, Jules & Jim, Day for Night & Stolen Kisses. My fav directors are:

Ingmar Bergman(Persona, The Seventh Seal, Wild Starwberries, The Virgin Spring, Fanny and Alexander)

Akira Kurosawa(The Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Ran, Iriku, Rashomon, The Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood)

Federico Fellini(8 1/2, Nights of Cabiria, La Strada, Amarcord, La Dolce Vita)

Michelangelo Antonioni(L'aventura, The Red Desert, Blow Up, The Passenger)

Jean Luc Godard(Breathless, Weekend, Masculine-Feminine, Band of Outsiders, My Life to Live, Alphaville)

Werner Herzog(Aguirre-the Wrath of God, Stroszek, Fitzcarraldo, Everyman for Himself and God Against All)

Wim Wenders(Wings of Desire, Paris Texas, Alice in the Cities, Kings of the Road, The American Friend)

Jean Renior(Grand Illusion, The Rules of the Game, Boudu Saved from Drowning, The River, The Crimes of Monsieur Lange)

Zhang Yimou(Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern, To Live, The Story of Qiu Ju)

Andrei Tarkovsky(Andrei Rublev, Solaris)

Krzysztof Kieslowski(The Decalogue, The Double Life of Veronique, Blue, White, Red)

Bernardo Bertolucci(The Conformist, 1900, The Last Emperor)

Vittorio DeSica(The Bicycle Theif, Umberto D, Miracle in Milan, Two Women)

and some favs I remember off the top of my head: M, Das Boot, Ashes and Diamonds, Ugestu, Kwaidan, Il Posto, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Loves of A Blonde, Closely Watched Trains, The Shop on Main Street, Farewell My Concubine, The Children of Paradise, The Wages of Fear, Battle of Algiers.

Whoa! Could be here all day. The Brits & Aussies make some great films too.
