I tend to agree with you, det. CC knew he needed a "hook" to keep viewers interested once Mulder was no longer a full-time participant in XF and chose "pregnant Scully" as a way to do it.
If DD had agreed to the pleas and $$$$ to stay on full-time for season eight I think Mulder still would have been abducted in "Requiem" but I really doubt Scully would have ended the ep by saying "I'm pregnant". And, of course, if DD had come back full time Scully would have found Mulder in "Within/Without". I honestly don't think we would have even gotten the opening sequence of "all things" (Scully getting dressed in Mulder's bathroom while he lay sleeping, apparently naked, in the adjacent bedroom) if DD had agreed to continue as the leading man on a full-time basis. It would have probably been just another season of on-going UST.
