And even on soaps it doesn't always work. I weatch All My Children and they tried to have anpother actress in a particular role and she didsn't survive. They brought the old actress back. Certain big names like Erica Kane would never be recast. The viewers would never go for a new Mulder and it would pointless to even try. I don't think GA would even be able to act with someone she called Mulder that wasn't DD.

I think the writers made some crucial mistaskes otherwise that might have hurt the show's chances. Mulder's return was not handled properly. The GA thing was difficult. She wanted more money and Fox wanted her for another year. The show may have grown better without her but would enough people watch with both the familiar leads gone? Other things such as some weaker writing on their side and fans not giving Doggett a fair chance on the other side led to it losing viewers but there could be many factors.
