Subject: Scully couldn't see Monica and the guy struggling...
In reply to: Rabid, soothing KM 's message, "Yeah, that guy WAS plain annoying..." on 10:49:50 04/08/02 Mon

...because the lights had gone out. I think that's why she didn't shoot the guy and save Monica. She heard the struggle and was trying to locate them but couldn't.

Meanwhile Mr. Burt knew exactly what was going on but just stood by. You could see he felt bad about the danger Monica was in, and it would have been a simple thing to call out to Scully, "Over there! He's got Monica's gun!" But he couldn't help because God can't interfere in human affairs.

At least, that's how I saw it. Doggett's saving the day irked me, too, even though I see these reasons why Scully couldn't help.

One thing I thought about later was that, the way Doggett showed up, it was such a "Deus ex machina" plot device. "God from a machine" is the translation, I think -- a sudden, fortuitous occurrence that could not be foreseen and is unconnected with preceding events. Of course since Mr. Burt was supposed to be God, this would be the other way around, machina ex Deus. The machina, or metal man, is Doggett (since Robert Patrick played the T-1000 in Terminator2), and maybe his arrival was ex Deus -- because God brought him, after all. (Mr. Burt does disappear suddenly, so maybe once Doggett arrived, his work there was done, so to speak.)

I'm sorry if that's convoluted. If I'm starting to get obnoxious I'll just go now :) It just seemed sort of cute. It would be the kind of visual/verbal pun (or in-joke) that this show does sometimes. Whether it was intended or not, who knows?
